During her time at ONE, Janice Bartolo was often targeted by Daphne Caruana Galizia in her blog because of her physical appearance and romantic relationships. However, the former PL media editor has now opened up about how Malta’s political crisis, brought about by revelations into the journalist’s assassination, has left her with a sense of disorientation and lack of belonging.

“This situation is leaving many of us in personal limbo. I campaigned hard for principles I completely believed in, whilst being trashed on the most intimate levels by Daphne Caruana Galizia’s writings,” Bartolo wrote. “At times there was no logical explanation for the ways in which I was humiliated, except for my political beliefs. I felt like her writing only had malicious intentions.”

“I still feel tremendously hurt and wronged by her, but I also feel tremendously hurt and wronged by those I fervently campaigned for.”

“I am left with a sense of disorientation and a lack of belonging I never thought I would feel.”

“If a week is long in politics, four are an eternity. I hope the Labour Party, the party that I like to call my family, is able to elect a leader that reinstates what I told people to vote for so confidently, in what seems to be a lifetime ago. My only certainties now are my own values.”

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has announced he will step down in January, after 12 years at the helm of the Labour Party. Meanwhile, Yorgen Fenech, the main suspect in the murder, has implicated the Prime Minister’s former chief of staff Keith Schembri.

In court yesterday, Fenech said that Schembri had kept him regularly informed of updates into the murder investigation. He said that Schembri told him that his phone was being tapped, let him know in advance when arrests were going to be made, and gave him notes on how to speak to the police when he was under arrest.
