Former President George Abela And Wife Margaret Discharged From Hospital

Former President of Malta George Abela and his wife Margaret have been discharged from hospital following a serious road traffic accident that occurred just over a week ago. The couple, who are the parents of Prime Minister Robert Abela, are now recovering at home, an OPM spokesperson has confirmed.
The Abelas were among several individuals injured in a head-on collision that took place on July 27 at approximately 3.30 p.m. along Triq Hompesh, a heavily trafficked road in Fgura leading to Żabbar. The crash involved a Toyota Corolla and an Audi Q3, the latter of which was carrying the former president and his wife.
Tragically, the accident claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman from Żabbar, who was travelling in the Toyota. She was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. Her 23-year-old daughter, who was also in the vehicle and initially listed in critical condition, has since been discharged from hospital.
In addition to George and Margaret Abela, the Audi Q3 was also carrying a 42-year-old woman and two young boys, aged 14 and 11, all of whom sustained injuries of varying severity.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and sparked renewed attention on road safety, particularly along major arterial roads like Triq Hompesh, known for its heavy traffic and accident history.
