Maltese artist Lucienne Spiteri achieved a significant milestone at the SiGMA Foundation charity auction, held at the historic Cinecittà Studios in Rome, when her oil-on-canvas painting “The Eternal Return” sold for €51,000.

The sale marked the highest bid of the evening and set a new record for Spiteri, surpassing the €45,000 achieved by her previous work, “Atlas”, at the SiGMA Convention in Malta last year.

“The Eternal Return” explores the harmony between dualities- masculine and feminine, yin and yang- depicted as two facets of a single essence. The male figure offers an olive branch, symbolising peace and divine connection, while the female presents a pomegranate, representing fertility, mystery, and abundance.

Both figures stand upon the ouroboros, the ancient serpent consuming its own tail, evoking themes of eternal cycles, unity, and renewal. Surrounding them, intricately rendered natural forms reflect the sacred balance at the heart of existence.

At the base of the composition, an angel gazes upward, his expression hovering between boredom and amusement, as if observing the endless cycles of life with a quiet sense of irony.

The auction not only highlighted Spiteri’s growing international acclaim but also contributed to the charitable initiatives supported by the SiGMA Foundation, blending artistic achievement with philanthropy.
