Malta Waterpolo U18s Make History At European Championships

Malta’s U18 men’s national waterpolo team has made history at the European Junior U18 Men’s Elite Waterpolo Championships, finishing in 9th place after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Germany.
Led by coach Jonathan Valletta, the Maltese side sealed their best-ever result at this level, placing among the top 10 nations in Europe for the very first time.
This morning, Malta faced Germany for the second time in the tournament, once again coming out on top after penalties in the 9th–10th place playoff.

The Maltese team got off to a flying start, winning the opening session 3–0 and maintaining a one-goal advantage going into the final quarter. Despite losing the second and third sessions 3–2 and 4–3, Malta held an 8–7 lead. Germany then edged the last session 5–4, sending the game into a 12–12 draw at full time.
The match had to be settled by penalties, with Malta keeping their cool to win 5–4 in the shootout.
Jayden Cutajar was Malta’s top scorer, netting four goals, followed by Luigi Dimech who scored three.
This result cements Malta’s place among Europe’s best in waterpolo, with the young squad proving their strength, resilience, and talent on the international stage.
For the first time ever, Malta can proudly count itself among the continent’s top ten nations in the sport.
