‘We All Suffer’: Grech Calls Abela ‘Weak’ After Scicluna Decision, Says Parliament Should Intervene

Opposition leader Bernard Grech has taken to social media to express his opinions regarding Robert Abela’s recent decisions on Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna.

“Today the Cabinet showcased its mistrust in Abela when he disapproved the proposal to remove Edward Scicluna from his role following the accusations against him by the Maltese Courts,” stated Grech.

Scicluna is currently facing criminal charges of fraud and misappropriation in relation to the Vitals-Steward inquiry, to which he pleaded not guilty.

“Because he is weak, Robert Abela has been humiliated by his own ministers once again, because he was incapable of removing the Central Bank Governor who is facing charges related to some of the biggest fraud our country has ever seen,” he added.

Grech stated that as a result, we are now all suffering since Malta’s reputation is on the line. He emphasised the importance of Parliament discussing the position of Edward Scicluna as Central Bank Governor.

The opposition leader questioned Scicluna’s role, which will still allow him to retain a full salary although he has agreed to “temporarily” step back. He also questioned how deputy governor Alexander Demarco will assume the role for the time being.

“Since Robert Abela and the Cabinet were not capable of doing what is right, it must be the Parliament that does so,” he said.

“Our country cannot remain the victim of weak leadership. Our country deserves strong and authentic leadership – leadership that is not compromised and that does not defend those who have deceived the public.”
