Following an overwhelming response from the community, the XjenzAnzjan science talk series—an initiative specifically designed for older adults—has proven to be a resounding success. With all scheduled sessions fully booked and demand remaining high, organisers added an additional two sessions, one on 25 September and another on 17 October. Both sessions were also fully booked shortly after their announcement.

XjenzAnzjan is a collaborative effort between Professor Charles Scerri, Esplora Interactive Science Centre, and Xjenza Malta. The programme is designed to make science accessible and engaging for senior audiences, underlining the belief that curiosity and learning are lifelong pursuits. The second session of the XjenzAnzjan series took place yesterday and was delivered by Prof. Charles Scerri, who explored the science of memory, the brain, and how humour helps us cope. “XjenzAnzjan is a programme of talks for senior adults that explore the scientific underpinnings to a number of topics that are increasingly becoming important to our everyday lives.”

The series, held at Esplora’s Planetarium Hall, includes presentations by Malta’s academics on topics such as climate change, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and renewable energy. Each session offers an interactive and welcoming experience, encouraging participants to discover the ways in which science shapes our daily lives. Coffee and refreshments are served, creating a relaxed atmosphere for learning and discussion. Following each talk, the Esplora Education Department brings an added element of fun and engagement by hosting a friendly science quiz, giving guests a chance to test their knowledge and win small prizes.

The sessions will be delivered in Maltese by the following distinguished speakers:

  • Prof. Maria Attard will take participants on a journey through our daily habits and their hidden impact on the climate.
  • Prof. Charles Scerri will delve into the quirky science of memory, the brain, and how comedy helps us cope—- both laughter and insight expected.
  • Prof. Luciano Mulè Stagno will explore the science behind the dream of going 100% green—and whether it’s a fantasy or our future.
  • Prof. Pierre Schembri Wismayer will examine the fascinating interplay between ritual and scientific research while exploring the rationale behind the why.
  • Prof. Alexiei Dingli will uncover how AI and technology are reshaping ageing and our future in unexpected ways.
  • Prof. Alan Deidun will reveal the mysteries of the sea and how researchers work to unravel them.
  • Prof. Charles Scerri will be discussing dementia, shedding light on the science behind memory loss, brain health, and the importance of early intervention

The high level of interest and swift booking of all sessions underscore the programme’s relevance and reflect a growing appetite among older adults for engaging and intellectually stimulating content.
