Konrad Mizzi And Former Aide Lindsey Gambin Win €1,000 Each In Daphne Caruana Galizia Libel Case

Edited at 2.01 pm with a comment from Corinne Vella, sister of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The outcomes of two libel lawsuits have resulted in former Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and his former communications aide Lindsey Gambin to respectively be awarded €1,000 in damages.
Both parties had filed separate libel suits against Daphne Caruana Galizia – the now assassinated journalist who alleged, in 2014, that Mizzi and Gambin had been engaged in an extra-marital affair.
In 2021, a court heard that Mizzi’s lawyers had been instructed to pursue an out-of-court settlement in the case.
That same court also heard testimony from the lead investigator in the Caruana Galizia murder investigation, who provided information obtained from Yorgen Fenech’s phone.
Allegedly, Gambin’s number was listed in this phone with a note saying she was the, “lover of Konrad Mizzi”.
The case was not settled outside of court. Both Gambin and Mizzi have each been awarded €1,000 in damages, after a judgement was reached by Magistrate Victor George Axciak.
Comment sent following article’s publication to Lovin Malta from Corinne Vella, sister of Daphne Caruana Galizia:
“The court has found in Konrad and Sai Mizzi’s and Lyndsey Gambin’s favour because, with the only person who knew anything about the investigation dead, her sons and husband could not mount an effective defence.”
“This is a human rights violation on many levels. People involved in the corruption that enabled and led directly to a journalist’s murder continued to sue that murdered journalist in an attempt to harass her family into silence.”
“The magistrate appears to have acknowledged the fact that the cases would be practically impossible for Daphne’s family to win in her absence and has tempered the award of damages accordingly. There will not be an appeal as this would be a further opportunity for the plaintiffs to continue to harass Daphne’s family.”
