At just 18 years old, David Brincat faces serious charges of plotting a terrorist attack, with Parliament among the potential targets.

Allegations suggest that Brincat planted an explosive device near the Labour Party headquarters in Ħamrun, along with placing similar threats outside two pharmacies.

Brincat is suspected of having placed an explosive device in a trash bin outside the Labour Party headquarters in Ħamrun and has been accused of “attempting to destabilise the country’s fundamental structures,” according to the Times of Malta.

Following an extensive police investigation, Brincat was arrested at a St Venera garage, where further explosive materials were discovered.

His apprehension was preceded by aggressive behaviour towards law enforcement and medical personnel, leading to his psychiatric evaluation upon arrest.

At his arraignment in court yesterday, Brincat pleaded not guilty to several charges, including manufacturing and possessing explosives, terrorist threats, and possession of illicit materials.

Despite the defence counsel’s request for a psychiatric assessment of Brincat’s mental state during the alleged offence, the court denied it after the prosecution argued it was premature.

Furthermore, a psychiatrist had previously certified the youth as mentally fit for interrogation and trial.

The 18-year-old remains in custody awaiting trial, with a protection order issued for the victims by the court presided over by Magistrate Giannella Camilleri Busuttil.
