1. Daphne Caruana Galizia – Investigative Journalist 

Daphne Caruana Galizia was a courageous Maltese journalist known for her fearless investigative reporting and unwavering commitment to uncovering corruption and injustice. Through her widely-read blog, she fearlessly exposed scandals and held powerful figures accountable, earning both admiration and criticism. Her relentless pursuit of truth tragically led to her assassination in 2017, sparking outrage and international condemnation. Despite the dangers she faced, Caruana Galizia’s legacy continues to inspire journalists and activists worldwide, reminding us of the vital role of a free press in safeguarding democracy and transparency. There is also now a Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism in her honour. 

2. Agatha Barbara – President of Malta

Agatha Barbara was a pioneering Maltese politician who made history as the first woman to hold the office of President in Malta. Born in 1923, Barbara dedicated her life to public service, advocating for women’s rights and social equality. She served in various governmental roles, including Minister of Education and Minister of Labour, where she championed initiatives to improve education and employment opportunities for all Maltese citizens. Barbara’s election as President in 1982 marked a significant milestone in Malta’s history, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations of women in politics. Her legacy as an advocate for social justice continues to resonate in Malta and beyond, serving as a testament to the power of perseverance and leadership in creating positive change.

3. Roberta Metsola – European Parliament President

Roberta Metsola is a prominent Maltese politician and President of the European Parliament, known for her dedication to promoting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. Born in 1979, Metsola has emerged as a leading voice on European affairs, advocating for stronger EU institutions and policies to address pressing global challenges.

In 2022, on her 43rd birthday, Metsola was elected as president of the European parliament after receiving an absolute majority of votes. Metsola became the youngest-ever EP president, the first Maltese person to hold the office, the first woman president since 2002 and the only third woman president ever. 

4. Mabel Strickland – Founder of free press

Strickland was one the first Maltese journalists, recognised for her contributions to the media landscape and public service. Born in 1899, Strickland became the first woman to own and manage a newspaper in Malta, the Times of Malta, which she helmed for over five decades. As a fearless editor and publisher, she used her platform to advocate for press freedom, social justice, and political reform. Strickland’s unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights extended beyond journalism, as she also served as a member of the Maltese Senate and as a representative in the Council of Europe. Her legacy as a champion of freedom of expression and democratic values endures, inspiring future generations of journalists and activists in Malta and beyond.

5. Ira Losco and Chiara – Artists

Ira Losco and Chiara are two iconic Maltese singers who achieved international acclaim with their remarkable performances at the Eurovision Song Contest, where they both secured second place for Malta. Ira Losco first captured the hearts of Eurovision fans in 2002 with her powerful performance of 7th Wonder, a dynamic pop anthem that showcased her exceptional vocal talent and stage presence. Similarly, Chiara captivated audiences in 1998 with her emotional ballad The One That I Love, and again in 2005 with Angel, delivering unforgettable performances that solidified her status as one of Malta’s most beloved Eurovision stars. Despite narrowly missing the top spot, both artists left an indelible mark on the Eurovision stage, earning admiration for their artistry, passion, and dedication to representing Malta on the global music scene.

6. Eve Borg Bonello – Politician

Eve Borg Bonello is a fresh figure in Maltese politics, making history as the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) in Malta at the age of 18. 7. Natalie Psaila – Doctor

A specialist in family medicine and co-founder of pro-choice NGO, Psaila is Malta’s first woman to make it to the BBC’s list of 100 most inspirational women in 2023. As a passionate advocate for gender equality and social justice, Psaila has dedicated her career to breaking down barriers and amplifying the voices of marginalised communities. Her groundbreaking achievement not only shines a spotlight on her own remarkable accomplishments but also highlights the importance of representation and diversity in shaping narratives and driving positive change on a global scale. 

Bonus: Eileen Montesin – Pop Culture Icon

With a career spanning over 40 years, touching on everything from typical Maltese family life to queer representation in Maltese media years before it was part of the mainstream discussion, there are few women on the island so widely known, or widely beloved. Montesin is an iconic Maltese entertainer and veteran actress who seems to be fully versatile in reaching audiences, from radio, to TV and to Instagram. She was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lovin Malta Social Media Awards and for good reason.
