A historic shelter, currently under the responsibility of the Lands Authority, has been transferred under a lease agreement for a period of five years to the Kalkara Local Council.

The property is located at the San Ġużepp stairs in Kalkara, and measures approximately 330 square metres. Through this transfer, the Local Council will be maintaining and preserving the shelter as a site of historical and cultural importance.

Its aim is to transform it into an educational and community attraction that commemorates the country’s collective memory and the sacrifices of those who lived through the war.

The Minister for Culture, Lands, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, said that this project is a significant step toward protecting what makes our country unique.

“This project shows how, through collaboration between governmental entities and local councils, we can turn historic sites into places of knowledge, respect, and opportunity for the future,” Bonnici said.

Robert Vella, Chief Executive of the Lands Authority, explained that the Authority’s priority is for public property to be managed in a way that brings direct benefit to the community. He added that the transfer of this historic shelter to the Kalkara Local Council represents a concrete step toward giving new value to a site of historical and cultural importance.

“Through this acquisition, we aim to further increase awareness of the suffering endured by the people of Kalkara during the Second World War. What we have today, we know only because of the courage shown by our forefathers. The acquisition of this shelter, hidden beside Villa Portelli in Kalkara, will create opportunities so that in the future this shelter can be opened to the public and enjoyed not only by the Kalkara community but by the general public as well,” said the Mayor of Kalkara, Wayne Aquilina.

The transfer was signed by the Chief Executive of the Lands Authority, Robert Vella; Wayne Aquilina as Mayor of the Kalkara Local Council; and the Executive Secretary Agent, Etienne Scicluna.
