Il-Festa Maltija Showcased In The European Parliament In Brussels
The Minister for National Heritage, Owen Bonnici, together with Member of the European Parliament Alex Agius Saliba, inaugurated an exhibition in Brussels celebrating the Maltese festa. This comes after the same Maltese festa was officially recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
In his speech, Minister Bonnici explained that 14 societies associated with the Maltese festa are participating in this exhibition. He emphasised that the festa is a tangible part of our country’s culture.
“Every locality in Malta and Gozo celebrates its patron saint’s feast, both with internal celebrations and external ones, including fireworks, traditional bands, processions with the titular statue, and many other traditions that are part of our festa. This is a heritage passed down from our ancestors, a fruit of strong generations, and a commitment to continue promoting this beautiful cultural expression not only within our borders but also beyond,” stated Minister Bonnici.
He added that the fact that the exhibition is taking place in the European Parliament, one of the most significant institutions in the European sphere and beyond, is a great prestige for a large number of volunteers who work passionately.
“With the assistance of MEP Alex Agius Saliba, these beautiful aspects of the Maltese festa are now also being appreciated by everyone fulfilling their duties in this Parliament,” Minister Bonnici concluded.
On his part, the Vice President of the Socialists and Democrats and Member of the European Parliament Alex Agius Saliba said that the exhibition in the European Parliament responds to the accomplished work of Maltese artists in a festa that is an integral part of our traditions and identity.
“It is satisfying to have the opportunity in this highest European democratic institution to showcase what our country has to offer. Above all, I want to thank all the volunteers who have done such wonderful work throughout the year to enrich us and those who visit our cities and villages,” said MEP Alex Agius Saliba.
The exhibition features banners displaying emblems and portraits from our folklore and history, such as the Maltese Cross, elements from the Order of the Knights, and other objects of traditional value.
There are also two screens showing moments from the Maltese festa. This exhibition, curated by Artistic Director Antoine Farrugia, offers a unique experience as if one is walking through the streets of a decorated village or city during the feast.
This exhibition is being held in the European Parliament in Brussels from the 6th to 11th March, 2024.
