Arnold Cassola: ‘I Have Never Given In To The Siren Offers Of Money Or Important Positions’

Arnold Cassola is hoping it will be fifth time lucky for him at the European Parliament elections in June.
The veteran politician came very close to getting elected as an MEP in Malta’s first European Parliament election back in 2004 and would have made it had the country been allowed six MEPs from the start.
Although his star has fallen significantly since then, Cassola has soldiered on and will contest the upcoming election as an independent candidate.
This is part of a Lovin Malta series with MEP candidates ahead of the upcoming election. The same questions are being asked to every single candidate and their answers are being published in their entirety.

1. What made you want to run for the MEP Elections?
Providing an alternative to the polarised two party system by offering to voters the choice of an MEP like me, whose political programme is based on the right to a clean environment, to clean politics, to a just and caring society and to a future of hope for Maltese youth.
I am convinced that, thanks also to my previous seven years’ political experience working in the European Parliament, I can bring about, also in Maltese politics, more accountability, more respect for the rule of law, more opportunities for Maltese youth and a fairer society for one and all in Malta.
2. Why should the public vote for you at the upcoming election?
Because I have a proven 35-year political history of consistency and credibility, during which period I have always stuck by my basic principles and values without ever giving in to the siren offers of money or important positions. I campaigned vigorously for Malta to join the European Union in 2004, both in Malta and at the European Parliament when, at that time, I was the General Secretary of the European Green Party.
3. What is the main issue/top priority you would be focusing on if you were to be elected?
Political accountability, social justice, high environmental standards and the right of all, including youths, to a level playing field, where you are judged on merit and not because you are a political bootlicker.

4. Can you mention one weakness and one strength of the EU?
The same strength in one area can be a weakness in other areas: the EU has had the strength to go for joint European Procurement with regards to vaccines during the Covid crisis and to gas and grain during the ongoing aggression of Ukraine on the part of Putin; on the other hand, the EU is weak because it has not managed to speak with one voice on Foreign Policy, in particular on the tragic situation in Gaza and on its response to Putin’s aggression in Ukraine
5. Tell us who your favourite candidate is from another party?
Sandra Gauci because, despite certain differences, she is nearer to my political positions.. and she is an honest person.
6 And finally, if you weren’t running, who would you vote for?
Sandra Gauci
