The Ultimate Guide To A Night Out In Mellieħa

Situated in the northern limits of hilly Malta, Mellieħa has a year-round summer feel to it, from its sprawling beach in Għadira Bay, to its picturesque views.
Planning an evening out in Mellieħa? We’ve got you covered.
1. Enjoy a walk by the sea
Kick off your shoes and start your evening with a walk at Għadira Bay. Maybe even enjoy a quick dip before heading on up to the town to kickstart your plans.

2. Take a step back into Mellieħa’s past
Up the winding road to Mellieħa’s main street and just off the beautiful spread of the parish church, you’ll find a narrow alley complete with artfully painted steps. Right at the top is the entrance to Mellieħa’s own wartime shelters. They are among the largest in all of Malta and Gozo and were dug by hand by the townspeople during WWII.

3. Walk around Mellieħa’s Sanctuary
Set atop a hill overlooking Għadria bay, Mellieħa’s parish church is dedicated to the Birth of Our Lady and dates back to the late 19th century. The chapel, which is located on the church grounds, is older still, dating back to the 16th century, and has undergone several expansions over the course of its existence.
Hang around long enough, and you might be lucky enough to enjoy the village festivities in honour of Our Lady of Victories.

4. Discover the Sanctuary Crypt
Across the road off the church parvis, a set of stone steps spirals into the heart of the valley of Wied il-Madonna, leading down to a naturally hollowed-out cave. Inside, you can find a crypt that adds to the Sanctuary’s overall spread. Interestingly, the Byzantine styled fresco that adorns the crypt is said to have been painted by St. Luke himself, when he was shipwrecked in Malta along with St. Paul.

5. Watch the sunset from Adenau Bridge
Returning back to the main street and just a short away you will find a short stone bridge overlooking the valley. Adenau Bridge offers views all the way down to the sea, making it the perfect spot to pop open a bottle of wine and enjoy the sunset.

6. Top it all off with dinner under the stars
Just off the bridge, and situated beside a set of glowing stairs, you can find Da Ciccio’s restaurant. Whether you choose to dine indoors, or enjoy a glass of fine wine along with a cool breeze, the restaurant is bound to get your tastebuds churning.

Beginning with expertly designed entrées such as mozzarella di bufala topped with blueberry compote, and marked with a slew of traditional Mediterranean dishes ranging from beautifully presented seafood to loaded Italian pizza, not to mention the wide array of gorgeously crafted desserts, Da Ciccio proved to be the perfect way to round off our evening out in Mellieħa.
