Of Leaves And Longing: Explore The Depths Of Costa Rica In ‘The Rainforest’ Art Exhibit In Valletta

Article Featured Image

Prepare to transport yourself to a different world as vivid colours and emotive brush strokes whisk you off to a breathtaking Costa Rican leafy wilderness, right in the heart of Valletta.

Join local visual artist, painter (and SMAs 2022 winner) Tina Mifsud as she undertakes her latest exhibition The Rainforest, enshrined in the gentle glow of the capital’s skylights and surrounded by towering plants.

Taking cues from nature and using Costa Rica’s landscape as her muse, Mifsud takes you on her own very personal adventure through the rainforest, literally and figuratively, as light and dark come together in a profound way.

The Rainforest is Tina Mifsud’s third solo exhibit and is an ode to the long-distance relationship she forged in the midst of her work travels and a global pandemic.

From Spain to Croatia, to her home country Malta and the state of California, the exhibition hones in on the time the couple spent in Costa Rica, embroiled in the throes of meteorological and public health storms.

Representing the last 12 months of her life, this body of works has more of a personal note where she explores all of the unique experiences the Costa Rican rainforest brought to light – artistic expression, and emotional introspection, this being the only place Mifsud and her partner could meet without being stuck in quarantine.

This duality is represented in many ways in The Rainforest, from the jarring differences between the delicate and warm portrayals of her partner Corbin, to the wild and mysterious shades of the imagined greenscapes of Costa Rica.

“In this collection, [she] superimposes images of Costa Rica upon others of a place she longs to be in,” writes Andrew Borg Wirth, curator for The Rainforest. “This place isn’t physical or geographical, but it is actual and real. These works use nature as a device to condense the constantly shifting parameters of their condition, and the addictive wild rainforest it can be.”

In [The Rainforest] one can perceive Mifsud’s intention, in some places to obscure, and in others to reveal. In what is becoming a distinguishable brushstroke, she encapsulates both fantasy and reality.”

Andrew Borg Wirth

The Rainforest is a year-long production of Tina Mifsud, and is curated by Andrew Borg Wirth. It is hosted within the Malta Chamber of Commerce and will be open to the public between 12-24 February.

The exhibition is sponsored by Deloitte Malta, and Lovin Malta is proud to support The Rainforest as official media partners.
