WATCH: Young Maltese Filmmaker Showcases The Beautiful World Of The Island’s Underground Art And Graffiti

What started out as a dissertation project for aspiring videographer and MCAST graduate Andrea Camilleri quickly turned into something more.
Beyond The Tag is a short film that delves into the hidden world of underground art in Malta. On its surface, it aims to demystify and shed light on the topic of street art, which commonly is misrepresented as an act of vandalism.
On a deeper level, Beyond The Tag explores how street art and graffiti can be used as a tool for change by evoking certain emotions and raising awareness on various topics affecting society today.
The majority of the short film is shot during midnight hours and follows two street artists, ‘Notorious Voice’ and Glenn Cauchi, who share the same passion for art but channel it in different ways.
For ‘Notorious Voice’, street art and graffiti is a means to deliver a message and encourage discussions on issues such as the environment and the dangers of social media.
For Glenn, street art is the reason he’s still alive today.
Beyond The Tag was filmed using one camera and one lens, a stylistic choice that people thought would not be possible due to the lack of equipment.
“I took it as a challenge” Andrea commented. “Equipment shouldn’t be a limiting factor in the creative world.”
Thanks to the work of Andrea Camilleri, we’re able to get a glimpse into the world of street art and graffiti, making Beyond The Tag a great educational tool for the rest of us.
