Emma Muscat urged people not to judge her for being English-speaking, stating in a Facebook post that she is proud to be Maltese but that mastery in English is crucial to making it overseas.

“I’m purely Maltese and I’m proud of it,” the 18-year-old singer said. “I’m proud of our beautiful country and our language. During my time at Amici, I would always mention how proud I was to be Maltese and always took the opportunity to shine light on Malta. However, I am fluent in English and learnt Maltese along the years. I always make an effort whenever I have to speak in Maltese, even though I know that I make mistakes. Sometimes I blank out and resort to saying a sentence in English when it doesn’t come to mind.”

Emma faced a barrage of critical comments from the Maltese public after Xarabank published a clip of her trying to speak in Maltese, but constantly slipping into Italian, right after six months participating in the Amici talent show. Many people questioned how the young singer could have forgotten the language after only six months, while others threw insults her way – calling her sickening and a snob and saying she should be ashamed of herself.

However, Emma explained that she was always more comfortable speaking in English than in Maltese, and that her Maltese got somewhat rusty after six months completely cut off from the language.

“Besides the total cut-out from the outside world, these two months encouraged me to think, reason and talk in Italian,” she said. “I’m bilingual and proud. My Maltese is a little weaker however I have always made the biggest effort to speak it, out of respect to my own country. For all of you who misunderstood, I didn’t “forget” my language.. I was just never used to speaking it as my first language. English is an international language spoken around the world as primary form of communication and if anyone aspires to go beyond the shores of Malta, English is a must. I wouldn’t have been on the show in the first place, wouldn’t be able to write my music and I would have never made it where I am today if it weren’t for it.”

“Lastly, I’m still the same sensitive, loving, humble 18 year old girl I was before all of this.. and I still have feelings just like everyone else. Please think before you pass a judgmental comment about someone you don’t know the slightest bit about! We’re all human after all – spread love and not hate.”

Emma Muscat, who recently signed a contract with Warner Music Italy, will release her debut album ‘Moments’ this Friday.
