The New Victorians Are About To Be The First Maltese To Ever Perform At This London Theatre Festival

Singing sisters Bettina and Philippa of The New Victorians are no one-trick ponies; when they’re not writing hit singles (like Me & You that debuts tomorrow *wink wink*) or coaching contestants on The X Factor Malta, they’re busy making some awesome theatre like their music theatre piece for children Rave & Behave.

Their debut theatre piece MARA made its first appearance back in 2016, and boy have they been busy since then

It’s been performed two more times after that; once in Malta and once in Scotland. MARA 2.0 (as it was informally dubbed) made its appearance when it was picked up by the National Theatre of Scotland for their Exchange Festival. The show saw a sold out run here in Malta, and achieved raving reviews from viewers over in Scotland. The associate director of the National Theatre of Scotland hailed the New Victorians as “the vanguard of a new generation of theatre makers… that will take the world by storm.” How’s that for a review?

For those of you who may have missed it, MARA is an original piece of theatre that celebrates the story of women through time and the amazing stories they have to tell. It also features some pretty cool live music and sound manipulation performed by The New Victorians as a cast of some pretty fantastic women tell these stories.

MARA is now heading to London!

Proving yet again that this is a performance that will never become outdated, the MARA cast is gearing up to take the stage at the prestigious VAULT Festival in London next year.

The New Victorians will be the first Maltese theatre makers to take a show to The Vaults, which is very exciting stuff. You can read more about the show and the cast here. You can buy tickets from the VAULT website itself.

The Vaults will be running from January 23rd to March 17th, and MARA will be there from mid-February. With sixteen venues, last year’s VAULT Festival saw over three hundred and fifty shows, attracting over 70,000 people. It’s quickly shaping up to be London’s answer to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

And speaking of the Fringe Festival…

… that’s where Philippa and Bettina want to take MARA next. But they need your help!

The New Victorians are seeking financial support, because all of this theatre touring doesn’t come for free. Local companies V Squared and ECCO are already backing them on this adventure, but they need all the help they can get. To find out how you can help, click here.

Oh, and by the way, there will be another Malta run of MARA amidst all this madness!

So if you didn’t catch it the first two times and are experiencing mega FOMO, or you just want to experience the beauty that is MARA again, keep an eye out on The New Victorians’ socials for more info.
