Għaxaq Tattooist Transforms Into Eerie Pirate Ghost Ship For Town’s Century-Old Carnival Celebrations
After all the buzz and chaos of Gozo’s Carnival in Nadur, one town in the south always goes hard and dark with its spontaneous celebrations… and if even only one of its locals is anything go by, this year is definitely no exception.
Għaxaq tattooist Martin Gafa’ showed up in his town’s pjazza dressed up in an extremely unique costume which transformed him into an eerie recreation of the Black Pearl ghost ship… complete with a blanket of faux fog oozing out.
“It took me three days to make and was completely made with recycled cardboard,” Gafa’ told Lovin Malta of his insane costume, which he said was also slightly inspired by Marie Antoinette and wanted it to be a “sort of dark ghost of Marie”.

Għaxaq’s Carnival is a unique spontaneous celebration which goes back over 150 years, with revellers taking to the streets on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (that’s right – Carnival continues in the town tonight).
“Even our grandmas and grandpas used to wear whatever they want,” Gafa’ continued. “Today, we’re still doing this, and we hope this tradition keeps going on and on!”
Gafa’ is no stranger to dark and beautiful celebrations – after all, the artist and co-founder of Oddity Tattoo Studio owns a hearse, which he brings out for holidays like Halloween.
Tag someone who needs to check this costume out and take you to one final Carnival celebration tonight!
