Għaxaq’s Area 51! Handmade UFOs Take Over Town’s Streets For Carnival’s Last Night
Known for its spontaneous Carnival and over-the-top costumes, Għaxaq was back for one more hurrah last night, ending the celebrations on a high note that quickly turned extraterrestrial!
A group of revellers took to the streets donned with a big, handmade headgear that recreated flying saucers, perfectly embodying the spirit of this more-than-century-old Carnival which is intent on keeping its unique traditions alive.
Among the group was Martin Gafa’, definitely no stranger to eccentric handmade costumes, who just the night before had showed up to the Għaxaq celebrations completely transformed into a ghostly recreation of the Black Pearl pirate ship.
“Even our grandmas and grandpas used to wear whatever they want,” Gafa’ had told Lovin Malta of his hometown’s Carnival. “Today, we’re still doing this, and we hope this tradition keeps going on and on!”
Keeping with the spontaneity of it all, a number of other similarly handmade and at-times-creepy, at-times-highly-satirical costumes were also spotted in the streets, marking a successful end to yet another year in Għaxaq’s colourful, twisted history with the the holiday.
