Divers headed to a popular dive site in the south of Gozo were in for a stinky surprise when they jumped into the sea for a fun session of scuba diving only to come face-to-snorkel with sewage.

The divers took to Facebook to vent about their ruined dive session. The divers had dived at Ras il-Ħobż – known as Middle Finger in English – near Għajnsielem in Gozo.

“Today’s dive at the wrecks in Gozo – when will this issue be fixed? Sewage all over the place, it’s time to do something – we are professionals as well and have the right to protect our health and profession as well as the customers,” said Tom Steiner, a professional diver.

The popular dive site is near a shipwreck, as well as the Għajnsielem sewage treatment plant.

This issue has been plaguing the dive site for at least half a decade, with regular reports of thick sewage ruining the popular area for divers and beachgoers alike.
