Illegal Caravan Parked Permanently In Mellieħa Conservation Area Removed By ERA
An illegal caravan parked permanently within an area of conservation raised concerns after it was blocking an entire area.
The location, situated next to Għar Tuta in Mellieħa, is often used for recreational activities or simply as a viewpoint.
Lovin Malta received details on the illegal caravan from a camper who went to the Għar Tuta area to set up his tent, finding that it was completely obstructed.
“I went there two days ago to camp there and to my shock and horror, I see the camper permanently stationed in this very spot closing off the whole area with a fence,” the man told Lovin Malta.
The area also forms part of a Natura 2000 reserve, a network of protected areas aimed at conserving Malta’s most valuable habitats.
Lovin Malta reached out to the Environment and Resources Authority, which ordered its removal shortly after investigating.
“The caravan was placed in a special area of conservation (SAC) without ERA’s authorisation. The authority ordered its removal,” a representative for ERA told Lovin Malta.
