Calling All Kayakers: Here Are 9 Amazing Routes Around The Maltese Islands

Article Featured Image

Kayaking seems to be on the rise in Malta, with many more people realising that living on an island with a kayak offers endless routes for anyone to enjoy.

The best part is that kayaking isn’t exclusive to any season, contrary to popular belief, and with the proper gear it can be done all year round.

Apart from that, one of the best reasons to kayak in autumn and winter is because the sea is empty and you can visit all the beaches around Malta, with no swimming zones!

Of course, it’s imperative that one checks the weather and the wind direction before embarking on a journey, especially when crossing the Gozo channel line or visiting tricky spots. It is advised to not go kayaking when high winds are present around the island.

Here are some of the best spots to kayak around the Maltese islands – as recommended by kayakers themselves!

1. Kayak from Għar Lapsi to Blue Grotto

The western side of Malta truly is a blessing of beautiful sights and locations. Just be careful to check the weather before heading out, to avoid those rough waves, as the water next to Għar Lapsi tends to be quite choppy.

2. Around Comino from Ċirkewwa

A bit of a more challenging kayaking ride, that probably takes around three hours of paddling. Stay on alert when crossing the Gozo channel line, and be careful with passing boats!

3. Għar Marija from Ġnejna

Another beautiful hidden gem on the western coast of Malta, Għar Marija is just round the corner from the lovely bay of Ġnejna. Quite an easy route for anyone starting off!

4. Slugs Bay from St Paul’s Bay

A bit of a longer, but quite straightforward route, setting off from St Paul’s Bay and paddling on until the hidden Slugs Bay. If you want to take it a step further, keep padding on until Coral Lagoon in Aħrax – but again, make sure you check the weather before!

5. Mistra Bay to Mġiebaħ, passing around the islands of St Paul’s Bay

Mistra Bay is another great location to set off on a paddling trip – just keep heading out and follow the coast on the left, to get to Mġiebaħ Bay. You’ll see the islands on your way! Stopping is also an option, however the sea needs to be super calm.

6. Rinella Cave

Starting off from Rinella Bay in Kalkara, the cave is a must-explore spot in the island of Malta – and you can also spot some old canons submerged in the water!

7. Coral Lagoon

A great starting point to get to Coral Lagoon is from Aħrax bay, which is around one kilometre away from the destination. Kayakers are always advised to check weather conditions beforehand, as the sea can get quite choppy in these areas.

8. Round Gozo

This one’s for the professionals – a round-the-island padding trip around Malta’s sister island, Gozo, with some mesmerizing views to take in along the way.

9. Dwejra to Qbajjar

Two beautiful Gozitan locations, combined into one trip. Starting off from the Dwejra inland sea, going out into the great water, and all the way until the beautiful Qbajjar bay. You can even stop for a break at Il-Qolla il-Bajda!
