‘Nails, Sharp Rocks And Plastic’: Msida Resident Laments Dangerous And Unsightly Construction

An Msida resident has approached Lovin Malta to share photos and information about a construction site on Triq C De Brocktorff, Gżira – which they believe is a significant hazard to pedestrians and passing traffic.

“The photos show dangerous construction debris such as nails, sharp rocks and a plastic net that is being destroyed and scattered everywhere,” the Msida resident, who has been there for 17-years, told Lovin Malta.

“On top of that, the site has dangerous scaffolding at street level – with no caution signs.”

The resident says that prior to informing Lovin Malta about this, they reported the hazards to the police and local council.

“The site has been in this condition for two years.”

They also added that beyond being kept in a perpetual state of hazardous disrepair, construction work on the site has been actively endangering those in the area.

“At one point, a crane was carrying massive sacks of gravel, which were being dangled over oncoming cars and traffic.”

They alleged that the construction project was being carried out with, “incorrect permits and no signage of road closure”.

This sort of construction project is all too common in Malta.

They leave streets strewn with hazardous construction materials, unsightly waste pileups and an air thick with dust.

The discomfort caused by these developments has led many to protest against authorities allowing so much building to take place.

Many are calling for an end to this era of unbridled, seemingly uncontrolled and uncontrollable construction.

The potentially dangerous working practices described by this witness are a result of lacking building regulation enforcement – which needs to be examined and strengthened in order to prevent dangerous building practices from endangering more lives than they already have – in the Maltese economy’s most fatal sector.

Do you know of a construction site in a similar state?
