Thousands March Towards Valletta In National Environment Protest
Hundreds of people have flocked to the National Environment Protest currently heading into Valletta – to express their unhappiness with the way that the Maltese state is treating the natural environment.
While we cannot yet accurately estimate how many people are in attendance, some have said that around three thousand people are in our capital with a shared purpose.
The slogan for the protest – Xebbajtuna – which loosely translates to “you’ve driven us too far and we’ve had enough” – is being clearly expressed through the presence of so many people.
Addressing the protest, people even saw politicians hailing from both the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party, with Labour mayors Paul Buttigieg, Conrad Borg Manche, and Josef Masini Vento being present at the front.
This is not just a denunciation of a government with an agenda which many perceive to be a driven purely by the pursuit of profit – with disregard for the desires and needs of the people – but it is also an impressive celebration of the power of those people.
Still, dozens more are continuing to stream into the movement, it is clear that this message will be one that authorities will struggle to ignore.
Xebbajtuna.
