Rusty water was spotted leaking into the sea in Sliema, posing a threat to the marine wildlife as well as swimmers in the area.

The video was sent to Lovin Malta earlier this week and was captured around a week ago, showing brown water leaking directly into the sea.

“This was under the Independence Gardens in Sliema. I went to check the source and found these two workmen cleaning out the pond,” the source told Lovin Malta.

“I told them ‘Do you realise that there the dirt is going into the sea?’ and their reply was ‘It’s not dirt, it’s rust’,” they explained.

The person who encountered the water then sent the video to the Sliema Local Council, who told them that they will look into the matter.

Lovin Malta reached out to the Environment and Resources Authority, as well as Sliema mayor John Pillow, to enquire on the matter.

The mayor explained how the incident occurred a few weeks back, and that it was simply dirty water coming out of the pond which was under maintenance.

He explained how the algae of the pond had just been treated with chlorine, which in turn created the brown colour seen in the video.

ERA did not issue a response at the time of publishing.

Do you think that the situation could have been handled differently?
