WATCH: Shocking ‘Plastic Soup’ Washes Up At One Of Malta’s Favourite Beaches
A shocking video was uploaded to Facebook showing a manifestation of plastic debris carpeted over Riviera (Għajn Tuffieħa) yesterday.
This disaster followed a Żibel clean up that took place only a couple of days ago. Due to strong winds and bad weather, the tide rolled in plastic debris, a common occurrence given the strong currents.
Plastics washing up onto our shores is something that occurs too often on the island. Local activist Camilla Appelgren informed Lovin Malta that the microplastics travel with the sea tides and are always present, making them a significant threat.
“What we get is the plastic soup seen in the video,” Cami told Lovin Malta.
Cami also called out to the government authorities to not just encourage people to recycle, but to also reduce the amount of plastics they use in order to avoid these tragedies from happening.
“There is so much of it that we don’t see that follows the seabed”
Żibel Malta commented that when they call out to people to not litter in the streets, it’s because the plastic will end up in the sea. Once it’s there, it will start to breakdown and fragment into these microfibres that wash up on shore.
