Miss Universe Malta’s Jaw-Dropping Costume Revealed To Be Inspired By Historic Maltese Lira
Miss Universe Malta will be proudly wearing a stunning national costume designed by style icons Charles & Ron and inspired by the Maltese lira in the 71st Miss Universe competition.
Maxine Formosa Grupetta will be jetting off to New Orleans in the beginning of the new year to represent Malta in the Miss Universe 2022 competition – one of the “most followed” beauty pageants in the World.
To increase her chances of taking home the esteemed crown, Formosa Grupetta will be wearing a gorgeous gown which depicts the LM 10 banknote, along with collection pieces from Maltese jewellery brand, Carisma Collections.
The Maltese lira was the island’s currency from 1972 to 2007, after which it was replaced by the Euro. And to honour this important part of our national heritage, Charles & Ron have designed a dress that depicts the LM 10 banknote which has been digitally manipulated into graphic design.
Meanwhile, Formosa Grupetta will accessorise her stunning look with Carisma Collections jewellery pieces which will portray the Maltese lira coins.
A new coinage was issued in 1986 in denominations of 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c and Lm 1. A third series was introduced in 1991 due to the change in Malta’s coat of arms.
“The one of a kind statement set of earrings consist of 2 Cents Maltese coins issued in 1995, which symbolise the Peace and Prosperity of an olive tree alongside their brand logo signifying Diversity, Charisma & Self-Love,” Formosa Grupetta’s team explained.
“Other coins depict the octagonal shape Maltese 25 Cent which displays a typical Maltese coastal scene including a rising sun and a traditional Maltese boat – The Luzzu, the Great Siege Monument and Queen Penthesilea depicting the ‘Woman as Hero’.”
To top it all off, Malta’s Miss Universe Will be proudly wearing the big back piece which is in the shape of a coin and depicts the nation’s coat of arms which signifies “courage and determination” which was generally found on the back of some of the Maltese lira coins.
Meanwhile, the 2000 on the coin symbolises the year of birth of Formosa Grupetta.
