Bin It, Don’t Flush It: Sewage Blockage In Qormi After Wipes Clog Drains

A sewage blockage on Mdina Road left quite a mess this week, and it’s all because of wipes being flushed down the toilet.

What might seem like a small, harmless act has turned into a stinky, costly, and totally avoidable problem for everyone.

Photos shared by authorities show the aftermath of the sewage overflow, caused by wipes that don’t break down like toilet paper. Instead, they tangle together, clogging up the system and causing waste to back up into streets, drains, and sometimes even homes.

Crews had to spend hours clearing the blockage, valuable time and resources that could’ve been used elsewhere.

Beyond the inconvenience, these blockages can create serious public health risks, foul smells, and huge headaches for local residents.

The message is simple: bin it, don’t flush it. Even wipes labelled “flushable” belong in the bin, not in your pipes. It’s the easiest way to protect your home, your neighbourhood, and Malta’s sewage system.
