Maltese Girls Are Officially The Most Obese In Europe
A new study by Imperial College London and the World Health Organisation has found that Maltese girls are the most obese in Europe.
The study, which was published in The Lancet, looked into obesity in children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 years over the last four decades. It found that if current trends continue, more children and adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely underweight by 2022.
Maltese girls in particular showed the highest risk in Europe, with 11.3% of Maltese girls classified as obese.
One of the main researchers, Professor Majid Ezzati said that “over the past four decades, obesity rates in children and adolescents have soared globally, and continue to do so in low and middle-income countries.”
“In Europe, girls in Malta and boys in Greece had the highest obesity rates, at 11.3% and 16.7% of the population respectively”

“These worrying trends reflect the impact of food marketing and policies across the globe, with healthy nutritious foods too expensive for poor families and communities,” he said.
Boys in Greece were found to be the most obese in Europe, with 16.7% of Greek boys falling into that category.
Alternately, Moldova had the lowest obesity rates for both boys and girls, at 5% and 3.2% respectively.
With these new facts, maybe everyone needs to stop talking about the Mediterranean diet, and start talking about the Moldovan diet.
