Mater Dei Hospital Becomes ‘Third Hospital In The World’ To Unveil New Nuclear Heart Scanner

Mater Dei Hospital has levelled up with the acquisition of a new heart scanner, making it the third hospital in the world to do so.
The machine came with an investment of €700,000 from national funds, but it will become an incredible tool for cardiologists in their routine examinations of patients.
The nuclear heart scanner not only offers a pristine picture. It does so in less time than conventional radiological tools, and with less radiation on the patient too.
At the inauguration of the machine, Minister for Health Chris Fearne explained that Mater Dei Hospital is only the third hospital in the world presently using this technology.
And with it put to use, it will be expected to perform up to 4,000 heart scans every year, reducing waiting lists in the process.
“This new system will not only offer patients access to more innovative treatments,” Fearne said. “It will put Mater Dei Hospital on the world health map.”

A myriad of heart-related problems affect Westernized countries these days, and Malta is no exception.
One out of every five deaths in Malta is currently due to heart disease, while almost 1,500 patients are diagnosed with heart failure every single year.
That in mind, the inauguration of Mater Dei’s new weapon against heart disease could prove more than useful in the screening of our country’s leading killer.
