A Maltese woman needs to have surgery which could result in her losing feeling in her finger after alleged negligence by staff at the Paola clinic who left her with glass fragments after she complained multiple times about the pain.

“If they cleaned the glass from my hand as the wound was still open, I wouldn’t need to be having an operation” Roxanne Grech told Lovin Malta.

Roxanne shared her story on her social media before speaking with Lovin Malta.

Roxanne rushed to Paola clinic after her shower door fell on her which caused her finger to bust open from the glass that coated her whole body.

As soon as Roxanne arrived at the clinic, she was met with a nurse who allegedly told her, “you could have had a shower to get rid of all the glass before you came”.

Roxanne explained that, even if she wanted to, she was suffering from the glass that was still attached to her skin which was dripping with blood.

“The nurse proceeded to clean me up and when I informed her that I may still have glass in my finger, as I could barely stand the pain or move it, she told me it’s just the trauma,” Roxanne wrote on social media.

Roxanne claimed that she repeatedly told the nurse that she feels like she has glass stuck in her finger, but the nurse maintained that the pain she’s feeling is the trauma, not actual glass.

Consequently, the nurse administered butterfly stitches on Roxanne’s hand and called the doctor to inform him that she is ready and good to go.

Roxanne went on to say that she asked the nurse to “at least” clean her arm and leg from the glass, to which she told Roxanne to go home and clean it with water and a towel.

“For the next couple of weeks, my finger became swollen, I couldn’t properly close it and I was in constant pain.”

As a result, Roxanne went to a doctor who booked an X-Ray and informed her that she still had glass fragments inside her finger. She was advised to go to the emergency ward at Mater Dei Hospital “as soon as possible”.

“The hospital told me that I need to have surgery on my finger and there is a risk that I will lose feeling of it. There’s that same risk if I don’t do the surgery too,” Roxanne told Lovin Malta.

“I have to miss work because I’ll be spending days at the hospital and learning how to work my hand again as I’m not able to move two of my fingers.”

“This is 100% a case of negligence from a doctor and a nurse who are suppose to take care of us.”

Despite this, Roxanne was sure to thank all the staff at Mater Dei for their “dedication and support”.

Lovin Malta has reached out to the Ministry of Health for a comment, we are currently awaiting their response.
