Here’s Everything There Is To Do In Malta This January

Article Featured Image

What with the insanely busy month that was December 2016, you’d expect January to be a pretty slow month when it comes to things to do, but it’s actually going to be a pretty full couple of weeks, and here’s what’s happening when:

7 January – 5 February: What Comes After the 1 Minute of Silence?

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 15 40 51

This month sees Spazju Kreattiv hosting an exhibition by Fabrizio Ellul dealing with the consequence of terrorism on communities in Europe. If you missed the opening night on the 7th of January, don’t worry – the exhibition is going to last for the whole of January, with a panel discussion being held later on the 25th of January.

10 January: Gallic Music for Cello & Piano

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 14 42 50

Cellist Sébastien Hurtaud and pianist Burno Canino, live at the Manoel Theatre, going through the classic likes of Debussy and Chopin. Kick the month (and the year) off with a proper dose of culture.

11 January: Strong by Zumba’s first class in Malta

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 14 56 24

Isotta Rossoni studied ballet for 16 years before switching to Zumba, and now that’s approaching her fifth year of teaching the calorie-burning dance-sport, she’ll be kicking off Strong by Zumba™ for the first time in Malta later this week.

11, 14, 20 January: “David Bowie Is…” Anniversary Showing

The documentary tour of the ground-breaking exhibition from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum is coming back to Spazju Kreattiv for three anniversary screenings, celebrating three years since its release and mourning one year since the iconic androgynous star’s death.

12 January: Valletta International Baroque Festival 2017

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 15 02 28

The fifth edition of the annual Valletta International Baroque Festival will include 25 events over 17 days in 10 different venues in the capital city, and you can check out the full programme right here.

13 January: Dark Carnival

Friday the 13th always has a couple of events trying to make the most of the notorious calendar date, so it’s the best time for metal promoters Rejects to come back with another event. Featuring Paradox, A Tear Beyond and Decline The Fall, the event at Razzett l-Aħmar will be hosted by none other than YouTube legend Daniel Dean Kingswell, who will be taking up the persona of Clownswell for the night.

13 January: I’m Not Okay (I Promise)

A party celebrating the horrible emo phase that a lot of people went through in the 00s, this night promises to be one beautifully weird mix of nostalgia and cringe. If you’re interested in reliving the best and the worst of the last decade, head on down to Maori in Valletta earlier than usual this Friday the 13th.

13 January: Wave by Dazed & Confused

Dazed & Confused Records‘ monthly residence at The Funky Monkey is back, this time featuring Dean Demanuele and F//asco bringing you some of the finest electronic music around.

14 January: 2017’s First Zip-line

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 15 24 33

As it so happens, MC Adventure’s zip-line in Miġra l-Ferħa in Rabat is also the longest and fastest of its kind in all of Malta, so if this has been in your bucket list for a while now, make start 2017 on a high note (pun intended) by crossing this off for only €15!

14 January: BAHR

Malta’s National Dance Ensemble is kicking off its third season with a 50-minute dance work as part of the opening ceremony for the Maltese EU Presidency. The teaser they’ve just shared looks very promising, and we’re looking forward to ŻfinMalta’s first collaboration with Albert Garzia and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

14 January: Weather Or Not! Episode 2

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 15 57 33

Last December, Duncan F and Alex Thomson’s Halloween party had to be cancelled last minute due to the horrible storm that hit the islands over that weekend. What came out of it, however, was a successful concept of parties in cosier locations. Now that winter seems to be finally kicking in, they’re back for a second round.

15 January: The Agones Trail Running League 2017: Race 1

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 16 07 49

The first of four races in the Agones Trail Running League 2017 is a 5km long beautiful trail taking place in Buskett. The race starts at 8am and registration closes just before, so be sure to have a good early sleep the day before!

16 January: HOS 10k Series: Valletta Edition

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 16 13 48

The first of a five 10k race series will be kicking off in the best possible style with beautiful Valletta itself. While registrations have already closed, that’s no reason not to go and show your support…or starting the year off on a scenic high.

19 January: Ġugar Winter Cinema: Black Mirror

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 16 26 11

Every Thursday starting from the 19th of January, Ġugar’s little cinema downstairs will be showing the best episodes from the insane Charlie Brooker dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror. Free entrance and free popcorn?! Count us in!

20 January – 26 February: We Lost The War

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 16 33 56

Ryan Falzon’s latest work sees him mixing pop art and neo expressionism through what might at first seem like simple and easily-recognizable icons and symbols. However, the fact that they can be read in various ways within the overarching theme of loss seems to invite reflection, without offering no easy answers. The exhibition will be up at Spazju Kreattiv for the whole of January in Spaces C1-C4.

20 January: Lollipop #2

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 16 44 08

“It is with great (sexual) pleasure that we invite you to join us for Lollipop #2.”

That’s pretty much all you need to know about the return of AXM’s clubbing Fridays, and with  Chunky spinning the best pop, house and disco hits and the amazing Kris Micallef taking shots of the whole nights, it’s shaping up to be another great one.

21 January: NEURO 80s

No one does 80s and 90s nostalgia quite like Alex Grech, and Saturday 21st January marks the first night of 2017 where the big man himself comes back doing what he does best.

21 January: Blackstar: A Tribute to David Bowie

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 16 59 27

Following last year’s memorable and emotionally-charged farewell that Trackage Scheme gave David Bowie, they’ve decided to make this an annual fundraising party in aid of Putting Cares & Reaching Cambodia.

21 January: Endlec & Archivone at Liquid

BLACK ARMY presents a whole regiment of talent for its debut, including Grecian Endlec. and Italian producer / remixer ArchivOne. All of this is going down at Liquid, of course.

22 January: Solidarity Walk with Migrants

Screen Shot 2017 01 09 At 17 13 28

Congregating in front of the LOVE sign in St. Julian’s (where else?!), the public is invited to a walk in solidarity with migrants to promote positive vibes and love in the face of so much fear and anxiety among the migrant community in Malta.

28 January: Dark Winter Meeting

An extreme metal festival marking the first of its genre in 2017, featuring nine bands from all over the world, including Slovakian melodic dark doom metal band Doomas. End the month on as heavy a note as possible!

What event are you most looking forward to this month? Tell us in the comments and tag someone who’s down for a couple of nights out this January!
