New Original Queer Musical ‘It-Teatru Tal-Miskin’ Hitting Maltese Islands For Pride Month

A new original Maltese musical dealing with what it’s like growing up queer locally is hitting theatres this month in Malta and Gozo.

And what other better time for a locally produced queer musical, than during Malta’s pride month itself?

Lovin Malta spoke with Thomas Camilleri, a local actor, who is soon appearing in the upcoming Maltese musical it-Teatru tal-Miskin.

“It’s all about growing up queer in Malta with the attitudes that are still prevalent here,” Camilleri explained.

“The bus doesn’t come to Ħal Fern. It’s cut off and left behind and with it, its poor inhabitants. Three storytelling clowns come to Ħal Fern one day. In strange clothes and outlandish makeup, these outsiders come to tell a tale, it-Teatru tal-Miskin, that the villagers know too well, though the mists of time have obscured their memories,” he said.

“Chiara Hyzler, Sean Borg and I are the cast of buffi (clowns) who bring this to life on the stage,” Camilleri said.

“This tale is made up of stories relating to the village inhabitants and how intolerance has snuffed out the flame of curiosity in them. Stories that come in Ħal Fern, would rather remain buried.”

“Among them, one story is about a boy. A boy who one day decides to wear high-heeled shoes,” Camilleri explained.

The musical is none other than Luke Saydon’s brainchild, with Saydon having written the music and lyrics for the piece.

“It-Teatru tal-Miskin is a new musical that I have been living and breathing for years. It’s a most personal piece of work to me, and I am truly blessed to be sharing this process with the most insanely talented group of creatives,” Saydon expressed.

And the musical has got quite the dream team, featuring Denise Mulholland on direction, Ruth Borg on movement, Claire Azzopardi on dramaturgy, costumes by Louie Noir, makeup by Krista Zammit Marmara, set by Matthew Pandolfino and lighting by Moritz Zavan Stoekle.

The musical is set to be premiering in Gozo at the Aurora from 23rd to 25th September and in Malta at Spazju Kreattiv from 30th September to 2nd October.
