The Whole World Celebrates Pride In June – Why Doesn’t Malta?
Pride Month is celebrated all around the world during the sunny month of June but for once, Malta has decided not to blindly follow the trend and enjoy the historic moment in September.
There’s one standout reason that explains all of this and it cannot get more Maltese… Festi.
Yep, you read that right.
The decision to bump Pride to September dates back to 2017 and it was initially due to the general election.
However, after Pride organiser Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC) evaluated the preferences of the people, they agreed that September was a better month for everyone for a number of reasons.
For one, it does not clash with other national or local feasts and events. It gives people the chance to visit other Pride events throughout the summer. And it sustains the arts and entertainment industry during the shoulder period.
Pride is generally celebrated in June due to the history of the Stonewall Riots that started in New York on 28th June 1969. It is a key date commonly remembered within the LGBTIQ+ community as a moment that transformed the gay liberation movement.
Nonetheless, LGBTIQ+ Pride isn’t something felt during only one month of the year, it is a 365-day attitude with several important moments in history ranging through all 12 months.
But still, leave it to Malta to go against the grain for the sake of festi.
