14 Flawless Valleys Around Malta And Gozo You Need To Visit ASAP
Valleys and hikes are a thing best reserved for winter (especially in Malta), but that does not mean that they aren’t equally enjoyable in summer. Most of these places offer loads of cool shade and amazing sceneries, making them a pleasant visit even during this hot season.
Here are 14 lovely valleys around our islands which you need to visit for some time away from noisy beaches.
1. Wied il-Ħesri
This valley is right between Siġġiewi and Żebbuġ. You can find directions to get to it here. Bound with steep banks in certain parts, Wied il-Ħesri till makes a relatively nice trekking site for you to roam in.
2. Wied Għammieq
Kalkara’s Wied Għammieq is often forgotten and overlooked, just like the church, cemetery and Fort Ricasoli close by. Although the area is severely neglected, it has amazing views to offer along with priceless historical buildings.
3. Wied Babu
This Żurrieq valley is popular among people who like to climb onto rocks and stuff using ropes. It houses a lot of endemic species and its amazing beauty can be enjoyed and recognised by everyone. If you keep walking further downwards, you will eventually also find a cool spot to swim in.
4. Wied is-Sewda
Close to St. Vincent de Paul and Casa Leoni, one can find this underrated and rarely frequented wadi. There’s a couple of farms with goats you can awe at, and in wintertime this lush valley gets filled with water.
5. Wied Għollieqa
This nature reserve close to Tal-Qroqq will give you the chance to observe some of Malta’s wild creatures in their natural habitat. Apart from that, it’s filled with amazing plants, among which are wild lavender and a ton of carob trees.
6. Wied il-Għasri
This Gozo gem is a popular swimming, walking and biking spot all year round. The valley begins in Ta’ Dbieġi and ends between Żebbuġ and Ta’ Ġurdan. It’s a popular spot among divers too due to its underwater caves.
7. Wied il-Mielaħ
Another entry from Malta’s lovely sister island, Wied il-Mielaħ houses the island’s newer window-obsession. It’s laden with cliffs and endless caves and salt pans. There’s also the Ġiordan Lighthouse in the vicinity.
8. Wied Għajn Riħana
This valley is a great spot for bird watching. In spring, a lovely stream forms which goes on to join the sea in the Salina area.
9. Wied Dalam
As you might’ve assumed from the name, this soon to be national park in Birżebbuġa is close to the Għar Dalam cave. It can be accessed through various points amongst which are the car park right below the museum.
10. Wied tal-Lunzjata
Gozo offers many beautiful valleys, and il-Wied tal-Lunzjata is one of them. This lovely fertile piece of land was used by the Knights as a hunting ground and nowadays houses a lot of fields. The springs from the aqueduct offer a beautiful background sound for anyone who would like to unwind in a peaceful and quiet place.
11. Wied Ħas-Sabtan
Another wadi in Birżebbuġa, Wied Ħas-Sabtan offers scenic views and even abandoned farmhouses. This one is also pretty close to Għar Dalam, offering lush Maltese greenery and shady trees.
12. Wied Żnuber
Another Birżebbuġa entry, Wied Żnuber ends with beautiful jagged cliffs and panoramic sea views. It’s not a very popular spot for people to hang out at, so if peace and quiet is what you really need, head on to this beautiful valley.
13. Wied il-Baħrija
This lush valley in Baħrija is the home of the endemic qabru. And that is nearly enough reason to go to the place, scenery aside.
14. Wied il-Għasel
This historic area in Mosta used to be the home of St. Paul the Hermit, and walking around the valley you would really understand why he chose it as his spot. The valley is overflowing with the smell of flowers and herbs.
