Here’s How To Keep Your Hair From Withering Away In The Cruel Maltese Heat

Summer in Malta is one tough bitch. Even those of us who have been blessed with luscious hair will suffer. You’re bound to feel the dryness and crispiness this cruel Maltese heat is subjecting our hair to.

With the sun showing us no mercy, our hair feels all weird and lifeless, sort of scraggy. The result is a witch’s broom on your head, but don’t worry sister; we’re here to save the day.

1. Get to know your head

Lady, no two heads are the same. The myriad of different hair types on this island is a real Jesus-take-the-wheel situation.

We’re not here to teach you about which is which, but you really need to know your hair. It’s not only crucial for what products you use, but also how to use them.

You can totally learn about hair and scalp types here and here.

2. Heat styling is the devil’s work

We’re a nation of people who need to have spaghetti-straight hair, or else we would consider ourselves to be a failure. Given the fact that our hair is already super exposed to heat, maybe we really need to take it down a notch.

Try blow drying and straightening your hair a bit less. Air drying is quite quick, so maybe you can skip the blower on most days.

If you really need to heat style your hair, read the next point.

3. For the love of God, know your oils

Listen, we know this sounds strange, but oils are truly your one and only soulmate. They give you good food, good skin and great hair. If you need to use heat on your hair you need to also heat a good protector. Apart from that, we sadly live in an extremely humid environment, and oils are totally your super secret weapon to fight the frizz.

You need to choose your oil depending on your hair and scalp type, obviously.

There’s coconut oil, a total miracle if you have thin or super fine hair. If you suffer from dandruff this oil is also your friend.

Argan oil is a great heat protector and nourishes your hair better than anything else. It’s full of fatty acids and vitamins.

Avocado oil not only protects, but also repairs. This babe also offers UV protection and leaves your hair super soft. We love it.

Another favourite of ours is almond oil. This guy works wonders for thick or coarse hair, but please, only use a couple of drops as a little of this goes a really long way.

Shea butter has a natural thermal conductivity and works wonders on super curly hair. It’s amazingly hydrating and will forever love and protect your hair until the day you die.

You know what’s a good heat protector and gives some good hard lovin to your coarse AF hair? Grape seed oil. This baby will become your super best friend in no time, S2G.

4. Apple cider vinegar is your new BFF

After washing off the shampoo in your hair, give it a bit of good old apple cider vinegar rinse.

Just mix one fourth of a cup of this miracle vinegar with one and a half cup of water and rinse it through. It smells kind of weird but it’s ok; you’re going to condition it like a boss afterwards.

5. Be like Becky with the good hair

As a rule of thumb, try to leave your conditioner on for at least three minutes. Conditioners are not generally made for your scalp, but more for your actual tresses. Apply it to your hair rather than your head.

Before applying conditioner, try to remove as much excess water from your hair as possible. The conditioner tends to stick better to your mane when it’s not soaking wet.

You could also use a good leave-in conditioner to further enhance hair protection.

6. Enough is enough, towels

Stop massacring your hair with towels. It’s stupid.

It increases chances of breakage and damage which can be easily avoided. There’s microfibre towels made just for hair. If you don’t feel like buying one of those, just wrap your tresses up in an old clean t-shirt and let that absorb all the extra water.

7. Trim like a Queen

Trimming your ends every once in a while helps keeping those nasty split ends at bay.

It helps your hair grow longer and stronger too. There’s no need to trim your hair excessively, chopping off just an inch or so of it every month enough. Depending on the gravity of the situation, of course.

8. Give it some night-time lovin

Use a leave-in night treatment every week. You could either buy an actual overnight treatment and use that, or else you could use one of the oils mentioned above for some TLC.

Apply some of the good oils to your hair; sort of drench it, but not that much. Wrap your hair up in a reusable shower cap and an old shirt to avoid ruining your pillows.

You can totally rinse it all out in the morning. We know it sounds like a bit of a hassle, but it really pays off. You can use this one on the day before you wash your hair, to avoid any extra hair stress.

9. Buy a bunch of bananas

Not just because they’re tasty and make mean smoothies, but also because they make an effortlessly great hair mask.

Mash up your overripe and inedible bananas into an unrecognisable pulp. Apply that mess to your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes.

They’re rich in all kinds of vitamins, they nourish your scalp and also give your hair the protein boost it so desperately needs.
