Malta Is Full Of Awesome Local Markets You Need To Visit, So Here’s One For Every Day Of The Week
Open air, bargains and treats. Three of the things which make Maltese people break a sweat whenever they come to mind.
We’ve compiled a list of open air markets for you to pillage for bargains every day of the week. Thank us later.
1. Monday
Every Monday like clockwork, the Monti in Mosta is assembled to provide you with anything from second-hand books to household goods and orthopaedic pillows. The Mosta market starts at around 6am and is all over by noon. Be on alert for the old guy selling vintage mirrors, bullets and glass bottles if you want to make a great bargain.
2. Tuesday
The Birgu market is the hottest suq in the list. Seriously. The Vittoriosa market is chockfull of candy treats in bulk, mqaret, bread and pastini my god.
Look out for the guy selling bedsheets; he’s hiding the cutest and friendliest chihuahua in the universe.
3. Wednesday
The Żejtun market is one of those that opens a tad bit later than the others — will all be set up and ready to go at around 7am. From rabbits to cute old women selling fish and beans, you will not get enough of this charming market.
You will get extra brownie points if you spot the guy who lets you get friendly with his rabbits and gamiem.
4. Thursday
This Naxxar market is quite small compared to the others, however that does not make it any less of a worthwhile market to visit.
It’s similar to the Mosta one but a bit more easy to navigate through. As the other markets work, this one opens early in the morning and is closed off at around noon.
5. Friday
The Birkirkara Market is kind of the modern version of our local markets. It offers a weird variety of clothes, shoes, jewellery and detergents.
It mostly specialises in household items – balla borom u hekk – and clothing. You will also find the traditional farmer stall and, surprise surprise, a guy with amazing bakkaljaw.
6. Saturday
Żabbar oh Żabbar. Frankly, this is one of those markets we visit just to stock up on Maltese candy and anything that will make us gain weight.
So much goodness is found in this market that you should just survive on the mqaret all day. You can always walk to the nearest pastizzi shop to get your savoury fix if that tickles your fantasy instead.
Watch out for every single person you meet who’s selling food — they’re your friends.
7. Sunday
If you’re looking for vegetables more than anything else, do make yourself a favour and head on to the Ta’ Qali. It opens from 10am till 5pm, but of course, the earlier you get there, the better. This market offers a ton of local goodness, offering amongst other things all the good honey on the island.
Keep in mind the flower sellers, whose only purpose in life is to make your home look and smell amazing.
