MCAST Lecturers Talk About The Desperate Situation At Maltese Schools

Teachers at MCAST are preparing for a national strike this coming Friday in response to a recent trade dispute, and with good reason – teachers are saying the situation at the vocational education and training institutions is getting “desperate”.

The strike comes after ten days of directives issued by the Malta Union of Teachers, including orders for teachers to follow such as no submission of assignment results, no participation in graduation ceremonies, and no answering of emails.

But a group of MCAST lecturers who spoke to Lovin Malta on condition of anonymity said that the dispute is valid, and that they are being discriminated against for being teachers at MCAST.

“We are at a dispute as we are not being treated fairly as lecturers,” they told Lovin Malta. “MCAST now offers degrees, as well as Masters and research, yet we get paid peanuts compared to the University and Junior College lecturers.”

The discrepancy in pay is a key issue for the lecturers who feel like their work is being undervalued. But they also point to the infrastructure of the campus as being below standard, especially for a educational institutions, as well as the internet connectivity.

“Come to campus and see for yourself what a horrible state some buildings are in – there are open ceilings and things falling apart. Or you can try to login to our super, super slow WIFI around campus – no password required – and do a speed-test to see the amazingly horrible results,” they said.

Not only that, but some teachers even said that “at some institutes, the WIFI is not even available.”

Besides the pay, the building infrastructure, and the WIFI, the lecturers said that “there are many many other issues you could indulge in – we would leave that up to you to discover.”

Until their grievances have been heard, they will continue to strike and use directives as the way of putting a spotlight on the issues they face, even as students say that their education is being negatively affected by the continued directives.
