Salina Road Will Remain Closed: WSC Stands By Closure To Carry Out ‘Crucial Works’

The Water Service Corporation (WSC) has stood by its closure of Triq Is-Salina – with the road set to remain closed until June 15th as initially planned – despite bad traffic.

“It is important to note that the works being carried out are crucial for the community in the north,” WSC told Lovin Malta.

“Our team is working tirelessly to install potable water infrastructure that will greatly benefit residents in the area.”

This comes after the road closure caused standstill traffic on Monday affecting hundreds, if not thousands of people – with some students even missing their O’Level exams.

While the WSC apologised for the inconvenience and disruption caused, it said it could not open even a single lane on the road.

“Due to the nature of the work being carried out, it is unfortunately not possible for us to utilise only one lane,” WSC said.

WSC is investing €3.5 million to upgrade the drinkable water distribution network – which will supply thousands of people across various different localities in the northern part of Malta.

They described the major upgrade as essential “to meet the region’s current and future for a growing economy and population” before adding that the infrastructural upgrades will also “tackle low water pressure concerns”.

As a result of their work, WSC has announced a flurry of water service interruptions in various localities over the past 24 hours.

Residents should note that these are not unscheduled interruptions – and service should be restored within a few hours.

The corporation says that keeping the Triq is-Salina closed is a matter of ensuring the safety of those working to upgrade the system.

WSC said they coordinated plans with Transport Malta to minimise the impacts of the road closure on local residents and commuters – which means that the congestion being experienced should be considered a best-case scenario under the circumstances.

WSC advised commuters to follow diversion signs along alternate routes – and added that a shuttle service for bus passengers has been put in place to assist commuters.
