Silent Disco To Get Way Funkier With Lovin Malta’s DJ Competition Winner

With the popular alternative music festival Rock the South set to return for its sixth edition next week, preparations for a weekend of great music are now in full swing.

Last month, we announced that we’d be giving one lucky person the opportunity to DJ at the festival’s famous Silent Disco, by closing Saturday night nonetheless. One of the highlights of the three-day music festival, the Silent Disco is a large tent where two different DJs simultaneously pump music into the audience straight through headphones. The whole thing makes for a surreal (but super cool) experience which has become unique to the island.

There’s usually nothing common between the Silent Disco sets except the fun atmosphere they create. “Previous editions have seen DJ playing anything,” festival organizer Nick Morales said. “Rock, techno, dubstep, reggae, drum and bass, disco… if it makes you dance, then it works!”

So when we launched our competition and asked people to send in their mixes, Nick was expecting a couple of interesting submissions. What he wasn’t expecting, however, was a barrage of great mixes that ranged from deep house to 40s rock and roll. Choosing a winner was tough, but we finally have a name!

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to DJ LoFi Flow.

Perhaps a new name for some, Pedro Villalba Lopez has actually been helping out Maltese musicians behind the scenes for a while now. In December 2016, he was instrumental in helping Cryptic Street during their Barcelona tour.

DJ LoFi Flow’s submission was a 40 minute extravaganza of disco, funk and rock and roll, which is definitely set to go down very well with the Saturday late night revellers. He will be taking the stage at 3am, so get ready for a long great night.

The runner-up of the festival is Franco Rizzo, known as Jacques Norris. He’s not only an actor, stand-up comedian and videographer, but also a DJ who’s appeared on a couple of lineups around the island over the years. Franco will be given a VIP ticket for the entire weekend.
