The Story Of Emma Muscat, The 18-Year-Old University Student Turned Overnight-Superstar

Emma Muscat is an 18-year-old University student, singer and pianist. She’s been playing the piano since she was a little girl, getting distinctions at every level. She’s performed at different venues and countries, from Rome to London, but she hadn’t really gotten her big break yet. That all changed last week.

Last Friday, she absolutely killed it on Amici, Italy’s most popular reality TV talent show, beating hundreds of Italian hopefuls to compete in this year’s edition. By 10:41 that same night, a few minutes after her successful audition aired, Emma’s Instagram followers shot up to 9,441. Just 60 seconds later, that number went up to 9,471. Three days later, she’s sitting on 20,600 followers. Everyone’s falling in love with the young Maltese singer’s looks, smile and voice, and 2018 marks an even bigger year for Emma Muscat.

“Her following on social media has exploded since she joined the show as she gains more and more fans,” her manager, Keith Kiko Muscat told Times of Malta. “She’s very happy so far, and the feedback she’s received has been very positive. She’s a perfectionist, something that is evident in her original music.”

Last year, Lovin Malta featured Emma as one of the Maltese artists to watch for 2017. In fact, it was on 19th December 2016, one year to the day, that Emma released her debut single Alone. Later on this summer, she released her second single, Without You.

It was arguably Muscat’s stunning cover of Alicia Key’s If I Ain’t Got You that really stunned the audience and judge during her Amici challenge, and it’s no wonder the young Maltese singer chose to perform that particular song among so many possible choices.

A whole two years earlier, a 16-year-old Emma was already pulling off a beautiful rendition of the testing song. Fast-forward to last Friday, and Emma’s cover took on a whole new level of perfection.

Emma’s popularity hasn’t only shot up on social media. Hours into her admission into the Amici household, a video showed the warm welcome that other house residents gave her.

“Emma has just entered the relaxation room, and already with comrades and crushes,” the video read, as female contestants crowded to befriend Muscat and male contestants seemed taken aback by her beauty, rushing to introduce themselves.

“Everyone’s in love with Emma,” a group of female contestants can be heard commenting at one point, while Muscat beams and shakes everyone’s hand.

Emma Muscat had auditioned for the show last month but wasn’t chosen, a decision that didn’t go down well with several people. Last night, the Amici producers – in true reality TV style – decided to give her another chance and pit her against another singer who had already qualified.

This year’s edition marks the first time Amici has been open to international competitors, so it’s expected to reach an even greater audience than it already does. As Italian, Maltese and international fans can see on a daily basis, Emma’s currently in the Amici school in Italy. This means the young Maltese singer has had very little contact with her parents and her manager, but it’s all looking great for the 18-year-old B. Comms student who quickly went from singing at village feasts to becoming a superstar.

Just a couple of days before her big break on Amici, Emma Muscat shared an impressive cover of Mariah Carey’s classic All I Want For Christmas Is For You, so if you want to get in the holiday spirit while still showing your support for Malta’s latest breakthrough singer, this is the perfect opportunity!
