Dawn Desira, the winner of the first edition of The Voice Kids Malta, intends to use her prize money to kickstart a musical career overseas.

In an interview with Lovin Malta, Dawn said she would like to move out of Malta and “have a life like Lady Gaga”.

“It’s not that I think I have to [leave Malta] but that I want to get out of Malta and fulfil my dreams outside.”

“I think most of the big legends, such as Freddie Mercury, left their homes. That inspires me, even to have a bit of a change.”

Asked how she intends to use her €10,000 prize money, the 12-year-old singer said her parents will deposit it in her bank account to be saved until she is old enough to leave Malta.

Dawn’s victory came as a huge surprise to the young singer, who said she had initially thought her application would be rejected.

Asked to send a message to other aspiring young singers, Dawn spoke of the value of hard work and taking everything step by step.

“The message that really worked for me was that if there’s a will there’s a way,” she said. “If you want it to happen, you need to work hard for it. Wherever you are and wherever you end in the journey is ok – just take it as a milestone for another milestone… just tiny steps.”
