Malta has said farewell to Peter, the Cocker Spaniel who served with distinction in the Malta Customs Department as a detection dog, passing away at the age of nine.

Peter spent four years with the Customs Canine Unit, where he was tasked with detecting cash and tobacco. Since retiring in early 2023, he left behind a remarkable legacy.

Over the course of his career, Peter made 84 positive detections, uncovering approximately €598,000 in undeclared cash and around 150kg of tobacco.

One of his standout achievements came when he intercepted €33,164 in undeclared cash during a single operation at Malta International Airport, a moment that underscored his importance to the department.

His efforts played a key role in strengthening Malta’s controls against smuggling and undeclared funds, earning him recognition as one of the most effective detection dogs in the country.

In 2021, Peter was honoured with the award for Best Dog during a ceremony recognising outstanding dogs in Malta, a testament to his skill, dedication, and impact.

Peter’s passing is mourned by his handlers, colleagues, and the wider community, who remember him not just as a working dog, but as a loyal and remarkable partner in the fight against smuggling.
