The turtle nest at Ġnejna Bay has officially hatched, with 79 hatchlings making their way into the world, as confirmed by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).

“After a busy couple of nights, today our dedicated ERA officials and NTM volunteers opened up the nest to make sure that all hatchlings came out, whilst gathering important data for our conservation records,” wrote ERA on social media.

The first 26 hatchlings began emerging early on 29th July, with Wildlife Rescue Team Malta volunteers noticing signs of movement just after 10pm the night before.

Out of the 99 eggs laid in Nest 1, 10 were fertilised but failed to develop, while 79 successfully hatched. Two of the hatchlings are currently being evaluated by a vet to see if they require additional care.

ERA reminded beachgoers to be respectful around nesting areas, keeping lights and noise to a minimum and thanked Wildlife Rescue Team Malta, Nature Trust, and Sostenibilità for their dedication.
