Although it may take most people a few days to trek the length of Gozo, elite trail runner Ryan Mex managed to complete the feat in a mere four hours and 20 minutes.

Ryan recently competed in the Xterra Gozo Trail, a 50km race that starts in Għajnsielem and circumnavigates the whole island, through rocky paths, sandy beaches, pebble beaches and cliff trails before concluding in Għajnsielem.

His 4 hour 20 minute time set a new national record for a Maltese national in this race, which has been going on for several years, as well as a personal best for him.

And he finished over 15 minutes ahead of his closest competitors – Kevin Zammit, Robert Formosa, Mark Bezzina, and Fernando Carvalho.

Ryan has now competed in the last five editions of the 50km Xterra Gozo Trail, winning four of them. His recent feat is particularly impressive considering a record number of people had applied to participate, including several trail runners from overseas.

“Today it was all about pacing and race nutrition, remaining patient till the end for a strong finish,” Ryan said, while praising the fact that the podium consisted of three Maltese men for the first time ever.

“Things are improving, well done guys.”

Well done Ryan!
