Maltese ultra-athlete Fabio Spiteri has two gruelling races lined, all in aid of abandoned animals living on the island.

Spiteri is launching Project 100 in an attempt to raise €100,000 between both events for local animal shelters that often benefit from Spiteri’s charitable work.

His first event commences on 24th June and it’s the 5 x Ironman World Championships in France which is made up of a 19km swim, 900km bike ride, and 211km run.

Spiteri already did this race two years ago in 111 hours; he’ll be using this race for a buildup to the next one.

Following that, on 1st September, Spiteri will be embarking on the Deca 10 x Ironman in Italy – a race that only a few people in the world manage to finish. It consists of a 38km swim, a 1,800km bike ride and a 422km run.

Spiteri attempted this race for the first time last year in Brazil but he failed to finish it after getting severe blisters which ended up infected.

“I’m going to try to be the first Maltese to finish and one of the sub-100 people in the world who manage to finish the race,” he told Lovin Malta.

Spiteri frequently engages in super-human challenges to raise money for animals in need, he’s done a 1,300km trek, a 1,000km cycle around Sicily, and a crazy triathlon in Brazil where he raised €52,000 for Malta’s animal shelters and cat feeders.

In a video posted to his social media, Spiteri explained that he combines these crazy races with fund-raising because of the sheer interest people both involved in athletics and not take in them, giving him a good opportunity to make as much money as possible for his cause.

The difference with this year’s fundraiser is that it’s opening from the first race till the second, meaning he has five months to raise money that will be distributed in medicine and food for animal shelters, cat feeders, and kennels for stray cats.

“With €100,000 I’ll be able to help a lot more entities, NGOs, cat feeders,” he said before urging the public to help.

His brutal journey starts in a week, so if you’re interested in donating to help out shelters on the island, you can do it like this:
