Although they might have not enthralled the Maltese public like they have the rest of the world – podcasts are actually perfect for Maltese listeners. Think of all those hours you spend in traffic, queuing up at the bank, or even pretending to listen to Auntie Doris’ neighbour-related woes. That time could be spent learning a bunch of awesome shit about things you’re super interested in.

Here’s 6 podcasts you need to start with if you’ve never podcasted before, or ones you need to get involved with if you already do love podcasts.

1. Lovin Malta’s Before Brunch

Before Brunch is a weekly podcast that comes out every single Sunday and helps you unpack all the topics you and your friends will discuss at the brunch table and throughout the week.

If you’re tired of staring down your mimosa as your friends talk about the latest internet fads or celebrity and entertainment gossip, this podcast will help keep you up to date.

2. Russell Brand’s Under The Skin

This podcast is perfect for any Maltese person who’s ever been completely alienated by people talking in intellectual-speak to each other – when you’d actually really like to participate. Russell Brand’s down-to-earth conversations with leaders on topics like feminism, slavery, terror etc. will completely draw you in.

It’s so easy-going it will have you pausing at regular intervals to give your own opinion.

3. Europhoria

This one’s for the Eurovision-obsessed amongst us. Two self-confessed Eurovision geeks talk about unknown eurovision stories from the competition’s past that only the most avid Eurovision fanatic would care about.

They haven’t featured Malta yet, but we’re guessing it’s only a matter of time.

4. S-Town

In 2015 a true-crime podcast called Serial made gigantic waves on the global pop-culture scene, introducing podcast-listening to tonnes of new listeners due to its complete and utter addictiveness. Now the same producers have made S-Town, a podcast that tells a story of an American town and its secrets – one episode at a time.

If you like crime, love, psychology, and a whole lot of drama – you’d better clear eight hours out of your schedule.

5. Desert Island Discs

For any Maltese person who likes to know other people’s personal histories – so, everyone on the island – this one is golden. It’s been running for decades as a BBC radio show, but it’s also available in podcast version. The format is as follows: one extremely likeable host asking personal questions to some of the world’s biggest celebrities from all different cultural backgrounds.

The interviewees have to pick eight songs that they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island, and the interview is structured around those songs. Highlights include – Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, David Beckham, Stephen Fry and many, many more.

6. Guilty Feminist

This podcast has been getting some awesome reviews and growing a dedicated audience. Its hosts are two women who talk about how they’re falling just a little bit short of being ‘model’ feminists. So they discuss compelling female issues with a “I’m a feminist, but…” twist to each episode.

This one is going to be perfect for Malta’s ever-growing awareness on women’s rights – whilst remaining very personable and undogmatic.

7. Kermode & Mayo’s Film Review

Think of it as a British version of Malta’s Oz & Jay – in that it’s made up in large part of the squabbling chattering of two middle-aged men. They’re hilarious in their own very unique way – having constructed a whole new lexicon over the years, as well as a number of in-jokes that won’t take you long to grasp. They’ll have you hooked without you even realising it.

Buried amidst the sometimes outright childish banter is some seriously good movie-critiquing, and equally brilliant interviews with movie-makers and stars.

BONUS: Radju Ħaj

This totally addictive Maltese podcast is best described as a bunch of guys, with zero agenda or plan, talking about the crap all Maltese friends are discussing at any given time. You’ll feel like you’re in the same living room as they are, only with a pretty epic soundtrack to accompany the sprawling subject-matter.
