Watch: Forget Cocaine Bear – New Thriller Filmed In Malta Features A Drugged Up Shark Attacking People, Because Of Course
An “intense and visceral survival thriller” filmed in Malta and featuring two popular actors has just dropped its first trailer… and of course it features a shark on cocaine.
Deep Fear – which stars House of Gucci’s Madalina Ghenea and Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick – officially premiered earlier this summer at Malta’s Mediterrane Film Festival, but with its US official release date slated for 3rd November, the thriller has now unveiled its first trailer. And what a trailer it is.
Featuring multiple shots of the Maltese Islands – including an opening shot of the instantly recognisable Comino – the film sees Ghenea play the part of Naomi, “an accomplished round-the-world yachtswoman who sets out on a solo trip to meet her boyfriend Jackson (Westwick) in Grenada”.
But as she arrives at “an uninhabited reef-fringed island” (*cough* Malta *cough*) during her three-day sail and responds to a distress signal to aid a sinking vessel, things take “a malevolent twist”.
It turns out the sinking ship’s survivors are savage drug traffickers who force Naomi to dive down to retrieve 350 kilos of cocaine. Long story short, a great white shark ends up consuming most of the cocaine as it’s being retrieved… and the rest of the trailer is as chaotic as you’d expect.

“The shark is high on cocaine,” an emergency broadcast can be heard, cutting to footage of the apex predator attacking people in Malta’s beautiful blue waters.
This latest “animal horror” follows a new oddball trend of mixing creatures and drugs, with 2023 already giving us Cocaine Bear and Slotherhouse (which is a beautifully-named film about – you guessed it – a killer sloth).
Already attracting the attention (and memes) of many film enthusiasts all around the world, Deep Fear – promising “a mix of storms, drug traffickers and great white sharks” – is one of the films which was last year given a controversial 40% cash rebate by Malta’s Film Commission.
According to the EU State Aid website, in fact, Deep Fear received a €1,324,178 cash rebate.
