Maltese parody kings (and queens) Min Imissu regularly take on many issues from around the island, but their latest video sees the comedy troupe tackle them all in less than two minutes.

Released as a promotion of their upcoming show Ġieħ Is-Sulari, the song is actually one of Min Imissu’s new numbers, and will also feature in the two-night show later this month.

Along with a long list of topics – from Malta’s controversial passport selling scheme to the popular call of L-Aqwa Żmien – the song’s accompanying video also echoes the classic ‘Blurred Lines’ music video that had risen to notoriety back in 2013. And if you’re asking yourself why they’re using a video that’s pushing half a decade old as their starting point, they’ve got a valid reason behind it.

“The video is a Blurred Lines spoof of sorts in itself,” Abigail Mallia, part of the team behind the show, told Lovin Malta. “We do have characters who’d be deemed ‘chauvinist’ in real life, and we sometimes get criticised for it. This makes us smile to be honest, since apart from the writer Carlos Debattista, it’s myself and two other women who are behind the show.”

Min Imissu’s track was first shared with the public last Friday, during last week’s edition of Xarabank. Since the song is a criticism of Maltese mentality in general, the team had received some (expected) backlash.

“Some political party supporters were saying it was just about their specific party,” Abigal told Lovin Malta. “But it’s not entirely against any one person or party. The show takes a look at all parties, even the Partit Demokratiku. The real target is the Maltese political system in general.”

As with most Min Imissu numbers, the short song doesn’t really hold back.

Lines like “Fotti in-natura”, “Ħokkli dahri u nħokklok tiegħek” place the country’s debated issues on blast, while some of the crew’s most popular characters dance and fool around in typical Min Imissu fashion.

Min Imissu’s next show Ġieħ Is-Sulari (itself clearly another dig at Malta’s current state with infrastructure and construction) is on the 25th and 26th of May.

Tickets can be bought online or from Valletta’s Embassy Cinemas, but you’d better hurry; if this is a sign of what’s to come in the show, expect tickets to sell out soon!
