Bernardette Mangion was one of last night’s ones-to-watch on X Factor Malta. After breaking down halfway through an emotional but already very promising audition, Ray Mercieca was the one to inspire her to continue and win herself a spot at Bootcamp.

Bernardette opened up about how she was bullied growing up but the 20-year-old University of Malta student wanted to prove to others that she wouldn’t buckle under their pressure.

Spurred on by her mother on the sidelines, Bernardette tackles Andra Day’s Rise Up but wobbles on a high note leading into the bridge, before Ira advises the young girl to take a moment for herself.

Bernardette admits she had no intentions to panic, but Ray then chimes in, telling her “sing it for you – show everybody out there who bullied you what you can do”. Ira praised her for taking control, telling Bernardette that it wasn’t that bad (at all, actually!) and now that it’s over, she’s conquered her fear.

Like a phoenix from the ashes, Bernardette swallows her worries and rises up for an audition that wins her a unanimous quad of ivas, making her the next contestant to enter Bootcamp’s grip.
